For over 21 years, as Ulstad Architects, Steve has provided professional services in a client focused approach. These personalized, one on one relationships, have lead to repeat projects with so many of our satisfied clients.

Steve’s responsibilities include business development, facility design and Project Management. His project management responsibilities include administrative and financial controls as well as team coordination for the progress, schedule, and the success of each project.

Project responsibilities consist of master planning, design, community design reviews, building code application and coordination, project schedule development and coordination, management of the professional disciplines through project development and construction, as well as construction administration.

Project experience includes new replacement critical access hospitals, specialized treatment areas such as 64 slice CT scanners, catherization labs, MRI suites, and acute and outpatient dialysis clinics. Long term care projects have involved implementing the new neighborhood concepts, dementia units, rehabilitation areas, assisted living residences, and independent senior housing.

Steve’s Landscape Design project experience includes new community and neighborhood parks, specialized gardens for art installations, public plazas, and water features including fountains.  Through LEED landscape and irrigation designs, we have created sustainable commercial landscapes. Community projects have included gateway developments and signage, bike and hike trails as well as roadway landscapes.  Health care projects have incorporated healing gardens, and memorial installations.  Steve’s arboretum and botanical garden experience involves planning, design and maintenance.

Steve has worked with a wide variety of client types from non-profit organizations and agencies to public institutions – such as the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics – and governmental bodies, including the City of Dubuque to the Veterans Administration hospitals and clinics in various Midwestern states.
